Seminars and International Contacts

In 1963 the foundation launched the Yrjö Jahnsson Lectures *. These lectures are organised every few years. So far there have been 16 lectures, given by top international researchers in economics. Seven of these have since been awarded the Nobel Prize. The lectures in 2002 were given by Professor Alvin Roth of Harvard University.

International contacts are essential to the foundation. One way of strengthening these contacts are seminars and conferences organised to celebrate each decennial anniversary. In 1983, to celebrate the 30th anniversary the following year, there was an international meeting with renowned speakers, whose lectures were published in the book Frontiers of Economics. Ten years later the theme was the Finnish economic recession, discussed at the 40th anniversary symposium of the foundation. These lectures were published in the Finnish Economic Papers periodical book.

In June 2004, an international conference was arranged to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Foundation *. The conference was devoted to Behavioral Economics, a branch in modern economics that seeks to integrate psychologically realistic assumptions into economic framework. Lectures presented in the conference are published in a conference volume.

The economic integration of Europe has been a major issue in both the support of research and the developing of new forms of co-operation. 1991 saw the launch of the Yrjö Jahnsson European Integration Lectures on this theme *. Several international seminars and conferences on European integration research have since been organised together with European universities and the European network of researchers; the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), Zentrum für Europäische Integrationsforschung (ZEI), and CESifo. Conference locations include Helsinki, Brussels, Berlin, Bonn, and Munich.

In 1993 the board of the foundation established the Yrjö Jahnsson Award in Economics *, given to young European economists who have made a contribution in theoretical and applied research that is significant to the study of economics in Europe. The EEA participates in selecting the award winner. The outcome is announced at the biennial congress every odd year. The first recipient was announced at the 1993 Helsinki Congress.

Every two years since 1978 the foundation has organised an international medical symposium in Finland *. The themes have been selected for both their medical significance and temporal relevance.

In 1997 the foundation initiated together with the Helsinki School of Economics and the Foundation of Helsinki School of Economics the Jaakko Honko Lectures *. The first lecture was given in November, 1998.
